China is the world's most populous country, with a continuous culture stretching back nearly 4,000 years. Many of the elements that make up the foundation of the modern world originated in China, including paper, gunpowder, credit banking, the compass and paper money.

After stagnating for two decades under the rigid authoritarianism of early Communist rule, China has emerged in recent years as one of the world's leading powers, its influence growing in the economic rather than military sphere.

Education is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese values, but sadly many parts of China, especially in the West, such as Yunnan, Xin Jiang, Qing Hai, Sichuan and Shanxi are so poverty-stricken that money for education is scarce and facilities often lacking. In these parts, children are often brought up in a subsistence lifestyle and most have little of no idea of what opportunities may lie beyond the four corners of their home.

Statistics from UNICEF are misleading in understanding this tragic situation. According to the latest estimates over 90% of children have access to education. However these numbers tend to ignore the most afflicted areas in the West where statistics of this kind are hard to come by. Even if literacy rates in China were 90% this would still imply an illiterate population of around 140 million- over twice the population of the UK.

However there is hope; as people realise children are our future and that basic education should be a right and not a privilege. Our society is but one small part of a wider effort to alleviate this educational crisis but it will have a massive impact on the children who will benefit from our work.

SunShine Charity (http://www.zhukun.com) is a non-profit NGO organization. It is founded based on “help-poverty foundation” of Lanzhou university of technology at 2006. And the name is modified to “SunShine Charity” in 2007. It is a formal organization under alumni association of Lanzhou university of technology.

Our purpose is that: try our best to help poor children to continue education.
